RoofPoint Ushers In
a New Era of Green Roof Solutions
The Center
for Environmental Innovation in Roofing has created a set of voluntary
guidelines for sustainable roofing systems.
RoofPoint offers all parties interested in environmentally sustainable
roofing systems (whether property owners, manufacturers, or contactors) a
comprehensive guide to selecting the correct system. RoofPoint allows all
stakeholders to evaluate and compare roofing alternatives by identifying ways
in which different roofing systems provide economic benefits and
environmentally sound solutions. It also
forms the basis of a certification program that can provide recognition of
environmentally sustainable “green” roofing practices.
RoofPoint
has developed a system of awarding credits (points) to different systems based
on a variety of “green” factors such as energy efficiency, materials
management, water management, life-cycle management and roofing
innovation. Roofing systems can be
awarded points for lighting, recycling, roof maintenance, new technological
innovations and more. The point system
is designed to reward progress towards specific sustainable goals and points
are awarded based on how each roofing system meets a set of measurable
criteria. The final score determines the
overall level of sustainability- in other words, how “green” is the roof.
Currently,
implementation of the RoofPoint system is still in early stages, but expanding
rapidly. The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing reports that commercial
rooftops cover over 50 billion square feet in North America and insists that the
roofing industry must play a vital role in the nation’s energy future. As knowledge regarding the effectiveness of properly
implemented green roofs expands, RoofPoint has the potential to become the
centerpiece of a broad new conservation strategy that can deliver energy
efficiency, production of clean energy, and conservation of valuable resources.
